We are preparing to upgrade our production partition from v6r1 to v7r1. Our development environment is at v7r1, though our change management system (Aldon/Rocket Software - LMi) is still compiling in DEV/QA and promoting into production at 6.1.
My question is this. what types of issues, or other gotchas, have been encountered in the upgrade, specifically RPG4, free, and CLLE, application issues. i know some SQL state and status changes were made, and we have to account for them, but were there others that may make our applications act squirrely? Thanks for any help or direction you can give.
From a CL perspecitive, IBM has enhanced CL with new built-in functions. You can, however in most cases, use those new features in V7R1 environment and compile with TGTRLS(V6R1) without an issue. The only change for CL for you would then be that the features (commands and other CL language enhenements) can now be used.
From an RPG perspective, nothing impacts you when you move forward a release. It only impacts you if you build on release N and want to compile for and run on release N-1. Then any feature in RPG that was added in (in your case) V7R1 cannot be included for TGTRLS(*PRV). Since you are moving to V7R1, you can leaverage all new V7R1 RPG IV features, including the "totally free format" syntax so long as you update to TR8 (I think) where that version of the compiler was included.
From an SQL perspective, the biggest changes came when you moved up from V5R4 to V6R1. Most v7r1 features are also in v6r1 but there have been tons of internal performance and capability enhancements. So again, upgrading doesn't cause you issues in this area.
As for your Aldon questions, I can't speak to those.
I used to use Aldon daily and am quite sure this is an issue in LMI configuration. I cannot remember where in the config but i know there is an O/S promote setting. I have been out of it for 18 months but remember I had a similar issue when upgrading from V5R4 to V71.
