Hi all,

I know there are several software products that claim to convert spoolfiles to Excel.  I'm interested in your feedback/experience/pros and cons with these products which will help me pick the best one for my environment.

So, what do you have and are you happy with it?

Thanks!

I'm sure most do what you need them to do. If you don't have one, you need to decide what it is you're going to do.

  • Copy to CSV?
  • Copy to legacy/standard Excel?
  • Copy to a multi-worksheet Excel?

Any of these are possible today with the various tools out there.

If you are copying only to CSV, the cozTools CPYTOCSV command support Excel functions such as column totals, date conversion, numeric to text conversion, and several others. But it does NOT do multi-worksheet Excel.

The "big" 3rd-Party SQL product does a lot of stuff when it comes to multiple formats.

Those are the only two that I've personally used.

CPYTOCSV converts a database file to csv, correct...?  I need something to convert spoolfiles to Excel.

Oh, so you expect me to read the Subject on your messages to get the context, huh?  LOL!

Well, I think that Sequel thing does just that, so my answer is still valid.

The subject, or the actual post, yes!

Sequel will convert a pre-existing spoolfile to Excel...?  (see what I did there?  I sneaked in "pre-existing" without you noticing even though I left that out from my original post!)

This one seems pretty nifty:

I sure "wish" we could write directly to CSV and hence Excel using a Report redirect/override. That would be cool.

I have some RPGs that write straight to csv files on the IFS which users then open in Excel and it works great.  Unfortunately, I also have a bunch of ancient programs that create only printed output, and quickly getting those into Excel after the fact without changing the programs is the current need.  There seem to be a few decent options for this.

Wrote a CMD/CLLE thingie long time ago that converts a PF/Table to a .csv in the IFS where I mail it out to who ever ordered it. There's certainly enough stuff out there to buy but the budget dictates what can be done. Also, you may not want to pay for all the bells and whistles you don't need. Straight conversion is what we need and that is what we got, at low cost.
