IBM i Access Client Solutions Update Download Published by: Bob Cozzi on 16 Jul 2014 view comments(1)

IBM release version 1.1.3 of Access Client Solutions on the first of July 2014.

This link can be used to download this update. Note if you haven't already done so, read the information on this Java-based version of "Client Access" which replaces the original Windows native binary version. This version runs on any Java-enabled platform. I use Apple Mac OS X systems, and it seems to run just fine--no bootcamp or VirtualBox required.

Tips for installing this update on the Apple Mac OS X:

After download and unzipping the file. Move the extracted forlders to your Applications folder--or to the folder where you currently have Access Client installed. Normally I just unzip in the firefox downloads folder, and then select all the extracted items in the created subfolder, right click and "Copy 11 items".  Then go to the Applications folder and right-click and "Paste items".  Don't worry if you already have some sessions configured, it won't overlya those existing items, only the application files.

Once IBM i Access for Client is installed, then navigate to the Applications folder (where you've copied the software) and locate the file named ascbundle.jar ("Access Solutions Client" bundle). Yes, it is about the dumbest possible name anyone could ever come up with, but that's IBM.

Hold down the Control Key and left-Click (or right-click without holding the control key) the ascbundle.jar file name. You'll see the Open and Open with... menu options, among others. Click "Open". You'll receive a message but click Open again.

The app will launch and from this point on, you can use the normal double-click to launch it in the future. Just that initial first time requires the right-click->Open thingy.

I tend to drag the ascbundle.jar icon to my desktop or dockbar and the system automatically creates a shortcut for it. At that point, you'll see the Java-oriented coffee cup icon. The good news is, you can rename the short cut to something meaningful. Like "IBM Client Access" so you and your users will know what it is.
