SAVSYS to VIRTUAL TAPE Published by: Bob Cozzi on 24 Jan 2013 view comments(1)

I'm wondering if doing a SAVSYS to a Virtual Optical or VRT Tape device is viable when it comes time to recover/restore?

Specifically, I'm wondering if I do a SAVSYS to *VRT OPTICAL or TAPE can I then restore from that virtual media or do I have to (still) copy it to a physical device to do the restore?

Theoretically yes, since you can do a D IPL using an image catalog, and virtual tape is really an image catalog. That should work if you have a system where you can mount the virtual tape before the IPL. But if you have to do a scratch install, I don't know if it's possible to mount the image catalog. Maybe if you're using an HMC, but from control panel only I have my doubts.

Safest thing is probably to SAVSYS to physical media, and everything else can go to virtual. And the SAV should exclude the path of the image catalog used for the virtual device.
