I get the following error information and messages -

 Permanent I/O error occurred (C G S D F).

n . . . . . . . . . . . . :   EXFMTR      

CPF5192   Data sent to device  not valid.  Negative response code is . 

 

How does this condition happen and how do I fix it?

 

It happens when executing the exfmt opcode in an RPG III program

Do you have data below X'40' being displayed?

Do you have a subfile on the screen without any records in it?

As Bob suggested, most likely cause is that you are trying to display data that contains an invalid hex code.  The following cannot be displayed:
